Britain in grip of icy blast as up to 6in of snow to fall by this evening but warmer weather is in sight with temperatures set to soar as high as 10C tomorrow


  • An Atlantic weather system will bring snow for majority of today
  • Most of the UK will get some snow today with a dusting for South East

    Much of the UK will be covered with a thick blanket of snow today as a weather system from the Atlantic sweeps in bringing up to 6in (15cm) in places.
The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for much of Scotland and northern England for today, advising people to be careful in the icy conditions and low temperatures.
Many roads are impassable as winter bites Britain yet again, while a number of crashes have occurred in Scotland and the North due to the icy conditions.

This evening London and the South East could see a dusting of snow, causing problems at rush hour in places.
But the snow will disappear almost as soon as it has arrived, heralding drier, warmer and sunnier weather for the rest of the week, forecasters predict.
John Lee, forecaster for the Press Association's weather division MeteoGroup, said: 'There is a great large area of snow across the country but it is being quite quickly followed by the rain in the west.

'So areas that are having snow - it will turn into rain tonight.
'The South East has remained mostly dry so far but there will be a small amount of snow in the early evening which will be quickly followed by rain.

Most will have a dry, clear start before a band of heavy snow moves into western Scotland this morning and pass eastwards throughout the day across most parts of the UK. 
West Wales, south west England and coastal parts of the South will see rain instead.
Temperatures will hover at about 2C to 3C (36F to 37F) in most places, though they could reach 10C (50F) in the South West or 12C (54F) in Northern Ireland.
'As soon as the snow moves through it does get a bit milder,' Miss Webb said. 'It will be milder for the rest of the week, mainly dry with sunny spells and cloud.'

The Environment Agency has 88 flood alerts in place, mainly in the South East, and 12 more serious flood warnings.
It is further proof that spring could still be a long way off as forecasters warn Britain faces another month of Arctic conditions. 
The snow is caused by a band of rain moving in from the Atlantic early today will turn into snow across much of England and Scotland.
Nick Prebble, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: 'There will be snow across much of England and Scotland, and it will settle through the Midlands, the North and Scotland.

'The Midlands will see up to 4cm (1.6in), further north in England will have up to 6cm (2.4in) while lower ground in Scotland could have 8cm (3.2cm). But on higher ground that is likely to be more than 10cm (4in), possibly up to 15cm (6in), with significant falls of snow.'
But the freeze is likely to be short lived, and the snow will thaw and melt away overnight as milder air comes in from the west, Mr Prebble said, paving the way for dry, sunny spells until Friday.
On Monday the heaviest snowfall was in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire with nearly 5inches - 12cms - falling overnight while much of London and the south-east saw several centimetres overnight.

Bingley in West Yorkshire and Little Rissington in Gloucestershire both had 7cms fall overnight while the Midlands, north of England and Scotland also woke up to more snow on top of the flurries that fell over the weekend.
Today forecasters warned of more bad weather on the way as the low pressure system responsible for the catastrophic US snowstorm 'Nemo' made its way across the Atlantic.
The area of low pressure will bring snow, sleet and rain to the North and Scotland on Wednesday prompting the Met Office to issue a weather warning for snow and ice.
Helen Roberts of the Met Office said: ‘It will be drier but colder for the next 30 days. If there is any precipitation it is more likely to fall as snow.’

The Highways Agency had gritters out in force ahead of the snow and said no disruptions were reported on the road this morning because of ice and snow.
But in Sussex, the A27 has been closed westbound between Bognor and Tangmere because of flooding. The road is not fully open. 
Network Rail reported that 82 per cent of the train network is running on time today with most delays down to engineering works or signalling problems.
